Ha. Thanks for the nod.
It's funny, I've spoken to a few people now (including Wintersleep supporters) who think that "Weighty Ghost" is a hindrance for the band given that it's such a departure from anything else they've done. Of course, at the end of the day an awesome song is still an awesome song no matter what (personally I can't get enough of "Dead Letter & the Infinite Yes"). You've got to love how we can cover a very similar breadth of music and yet still stay varied enough in our individual opinions to keep it interesting. Case in point, our respective top albums of 2007: you didn't love Wintersleep's Welcome to the Night Sky as much as I did and, though I definitely think they've got merit, I didn't place Amos the Transparent in my top dozen. Oh the wonderful world of indie music (now if only we could turn this into cash)!
How could you have never blogged about Wintersleep?
My mind is blown.
I blame being too St. Lawrence Corridor-centric! Or something. Honestly, the only reason I didn't write about Welcome To The Night Sky sooner is that it took forever for Labwork/Sonic Unyon to send it to me...though I had two years to write about the last album, and never got around to it.
This is good stuff, and I think you are bang-on in your assessment of Weighty Ghost. I have no problem with it being so different from the rest of the album, mainly because it is so excellent. The only problem I would have is if their next album contains 10 Weighty Ghostseses.
Their 2007 Ottawa show at Barrymore's was in my top 5 concerts of the year. They've really stepped it up with their latest cd.
Thank yoooou for posting about Wintersleep. I dunno if I agree with your view on Weighty Ghost, [it's a fantastic song, but I don't know if it's the -best- off of the album] but it's just nice to see these guys getting some attention. I've seen them live twice now and they are just all-around awesomes. While I'm fully happy with their three releases that I have in my clutches, I can't wait to see where they go next, musically.
Ha, that would be a great title for the next record (though a shitty thing to actually have happen): 10 Weighty Ghosteses.
