I was amazed at the number of people who seemed to really like Katie Stelmanis & Band the couple time I endured seeing them. File me under the "immediately turned off by its sonic harshness" category. Also, they were really, really serious on stage. I more enjoy seeing bands that seem to be enjoying themselves too.
I can totally see where you're coming from, and the first couple of times I heard her I felt the same way...it's definitely an acquired taste.
Matthew, I will admit I disliked the band quite a bit less the second time I saw them. Maybe the third time will be the charm? Within that raw sound are some memorable tunes.
do you really think big smiles and goofy antics would fit the music? it's got a serious tone, it calls for a serious demeanor.
and yeah, it can be sonically harsh, but there's so much melody and rhythm in the music I find it hard to believe that people can't see past the tough and loud quality of the music. each his own. this is all just to say that Katie Stelmanis made one of my favourite records in recent memory and I'm sure she's going to one-up herself next time around.
What can I say, I generally like bands that appear to be enjoying themselves. I freely admit I have a harder time getting into serious, more difficult or discordant music. That's probably why I've never gotten into much in the way of jazz. Maybe blame it on The Beatles why I get really turned on by pop melodies. On the other hand, I agree with ttttttttt that goofy antics should definitely be doled out in small measures.
