Proof that someone somewhere in Ottawa has the best sense of humour in the world: the fact that
Male Nurse can count on his musical résumé the fact that he's
opener for American Idol winner David Cook. Though, alternately, I guess it might mean that someone in this city is just hilariously clueless.
Either way, it would've been kind of awesome to see it happen. After all, Davey Q.'s ragged, Cobain-esque folk is about as far as you can get from your standard
AI fare. It was obvious on
All My Friends Are Assholes, the
incredible EP he released at the beginning of the year, and it's obvious from
Everything's Amazing, No One's Happy, his newest album (which, I should note, you can
download for free right here).
Of course, he has toned things down a little between the two albums.
Everything's Amazing... doesn't feature songs with titles like "I Love Matthew Cameron Oxley More Than Pizza Or Sleeping Which Is So Fucking Much". At the same time, though, the music here is definitely darker than it was last time out, as songs like "
Heed" and "
No One's Happy" demonstrate. It still makes for a phenomenal album...and really not one that mixes at all with the blow-dried, plastic-y world of
American Idol.
Now, if you want to see Male Nurse in a much more suitable environment, there's this:
As it says, on
Friday, November 20th at Café Dekcuf, he'll be opening up for
The Mohawk Lodge, who'll be testing out songs from their as-yet-untitled forthcoming album, along with one of Ottawa's finest songwriters (or so I'm told by people I trust),
Chris Page. It's going to be an awesome show, and it's only going to be $7, so don't miss it!
And speaking of unmissable shows, there are also these other ones coming up:
First,
Young Galaxy will be playing
tonight (Saturday, November 7th) at Zaphod's.
They'll be joined by two great Ottawa bands,
Politique and
Blazer. There are still a few tickets left at Vertigo, so get them before 5 or so!
Then, in less than two weeks, the night before the Mohawk Lodge/Chris Page/Male Nurse show, there'll be
this all-ages show at Café Dekcuf:
Two Hours Traffic will be coming to Ottawa to play songs from their newest album,
Territory. They'll be joined by Arts & Crafts'
Still Life Still, as well as
The Gallop and Gales side project Taekwondo No-Show. Given that it's all-ages, tickets are going pretty quickly, so
get yours today (either from this site or from Vertigo Records)!
And then in December, there'll be this:
The Habit,
Whale Tooth and
The Property Line will be sharing a stage at Café Dekcuf. I should point out, of course, that it's Saturday, December 6th, not Friday as I'd originally said. Regardless, it'll be a very good show, and it'll only cost $6!
