Pitter-Pattering around CMW, Day 3

Pitter-Patter: Put The Rifle Down (The Boat, with Sailboats are White, Paul Devro, The Diableros and Apache Beat)

It's hard to imagine a more diverse bill than this one. You have grating, destructive punk (in Sailboats are White). You have Apache Beat, who sound kind of like U2 during their dance phase. Paul Devro is also dance music, but without any connection to rock. The Diableros are one of the country's best indie-pop bands. And Put The Rifle Down...well, judging by their Myspace, they specialize in the kind of big, bouncy dance music that was supposed to take over the world a decade ago. It should make for a thoroughly fun (and very dance-friendly) evening.

CMW: Modernboys Moderngirls (Silver Dollar, with The Wednesday Society, Bermuda Triangle, Harmonica and These Electric Lives)

I don't know why I've never listened to Modernboys Moderngirls before, but now that I have I wonder what took me so long. It's fun, catchy dance-rock, which is pretty much my favourite thing for any band to play. (And for anyone who gets there early, These Electric Lives are pretty good, too.)

Pitter-Patter: Gravity Wave (The Central, with Now Yr Taken and Amanda Rogers)

I don't know much about Gravity Wave, but people whose opinions I value highly all swear he's pretty good. This is hardly the most ringing endorsement, I know, but those opinioned people have never let me down before, so he's probably worth checking out.

CMW: Friendly Rich and the Lollipop People (Annex Wreckroom, with Dustin Bentall, Mark Bragg and Ruth Minnikin)

You haven't truly lived unless you've seen Friendly Rich and the Lollipop People live. Imagine Broken Social Scene after way too much sugar (and, possibly, some hallucinogenics) and you'll start to get an idea of what this band is like...but only barely. It's strange, bizarre and absolutely worth seeing.

CMW: Young Galaxy (El Mocambo, with LAPKO, Rubik, Apostle Of Hustle and Callisto)

After seeing Young Galaxy live last Sunday in Ottawa, I can definitely attest to the fact that this sextet is great live. They're nowhere near as ethereal as they are on record, instead coming across as a more focused, more accessible version of Broken Social Scene. See them now, before the album comes out and they blow up so big that your chances of seeing them in a club will decrease exponentially.
