Saw them at the past NXNE... wasn't too impressed. The songs were decent, but I usually found the lyrics too childish (especially "The Only One..."). They also had instrument problems (bad when you're a two-person band) and played a really short set. When you're given fourty minutes to impress, use them!
Glad to hear you might be rethinking your semi-hate-on for East Coast rock. Haha.
I have to say that I was a bit perturbed about your comments in your Little Jabs post. I'm not sure how Wintersleep, Sloan, Matt Mays, Joel Plaskett could all "bleed together." Sloan has been Toronto-based for quite some time now and have been making music that sounds less and less like anything they did when in Halifax; Wintersleep have a sound all their own and would fit easily into the Arts&Crafts catalogue more so that any East Coast label; In-Flight Safety sound more like Pilate and Coldplay than Mays or Plaskett, and even those last two artists are worlds apart in terms of sound. Annnnyways, there is a lot of good music coming out of the East Coast, and Two Hours Traffic and Superfantastics are just the tip of the iceberg. In my humble opinion, Wintersleep are one of the best Canadian bands, and hopefully in the future you can look at these East Coast bands individually and not lump them all together based solely on where they're from. |
