I'm glad Final Fantasy is getting lots of love. He's uber-dreamy. Though I disagree that Martha Wainwright is the more talented sibling.. Rufus is still number one.
great list.
im sorry for some of my spelling errors. im glad jon rae made it on! + i am checking out the cay right now. cheers
Don't worry about the spelling errors...I thought I corrected anything that had to be corrected, but if I missed something e-mail me and I'll change it.
And thanks for taking part!
Great list - clearly the best time ever for Canadian music with very little help from CanCon rules or commercial radio. A truly remarkable assembly of talent.
But where the hell are the Weakerthans?!!!??
I wanted to vote for The Weakerthans. Desperately. But they haven't really done anything in over two years...and going on a cross-country tour with The Constantines doesn't count, since they did the same thing in 2004, too.
nice list. sadly for us americans, it beats the crap out of our list.
I think you have the New Pornographers ranked too low. To me, "Twin Cinema" is the best album of 2005, towering over the many other great records released this year.
Tangiers and Nassau for best albums. Thing is they are not quite "hot".
But yeah, great work guys. Mad props to the Snobbypants -G.
Sadly, Tangiers only got one vote, which really surprised me. Who are Nassau?
Nassau is a band formed by the current drummer for Tangiers, who used to be in Guided By Voices. Some McCann dude. Great album. Go to apolloaudio.com and you can listen to the whole thing there.
-G.
i really like the new Whitey Houston album. they haven't been getting much blogger cred, maybe its the name, but the s/t album is strong and "I Got Fucked By Liberty Mutual" is great.
What, NO SLOAN?!? (I'm kidding, but you can't blame a rabid Sloan fan for trying, eh?) I also really wanted to get the Spitfires & Mayflowers on there, but their time will come. Another of my "ones to watch"!
Nice job. - Beth www.rockpaperpixels.com
Oh, crap, I knew i forgot someone (i.e. Tangiers). Are you going to post a list of all the nominees?
A strong list, Cadence Weapon is dope and K-os' reggae shit reminds me of Tenor Saw sometimes, but the pointed omission of Kardi is criminal, and I don't get the big deal over Ninja High School.
I've just posted the other 44 bands that received votes, but didn't make the top 33.
Pretty accurate list, Canadian music rocks. However, am I the only guy on the planet that thinks that the Arcade Fire, although being a great band, is nowhere near as great as the Broken Social Scene? To me there is no competition. BSS would easily be my number 1, AC would likely be closer to 15 or so.
It's kind of sad in a way about how white-bread this list is, in both skin colour and musical diversity. More or less the same kind of 'sounding' bands.
Anyways, I want to step up and talk about how Bedouin Soundclash did not make the list. They've had some pretty hot shows all across the country, made a big splash on this year's Warped Tour, hit the top ten in the UK. I mean, their album was produced by Darryl Jennifer, infamous Bad Brains member. There's no denying these guys were probably the hottest rising star band this year, without the manufactured hype of Pitchforkmedia, or empty endorsements by David Bowie. Also missing from this year's list: Russian Futurists, Tricky Woo, Most Serene Republic, Shout Out Out Out Out, Luke Doucet, No Dynamics...
The Russian Futurists and The Most Serene Republic both got votes (I posted a list of the rest of the nominees this evening), but not enough to make it to the top 33. The latter, in particular, disappointed me, since I love that band beyond words.
i can't express the amount of joy that final fantasy is number four on this list. i think he's the most underrated artist of the year [but obviously not north of the border; canadians have good taste].
no chad vangaalen? i'm slightly disappointed in that. i mean, i know he released infiniheart in canada before this year, but the fact that he quietly took america by storm should have garnered him a spot on the list.
I agree with the person who said that The New Pornographers were ranked too low. But then this was a democracy, and this is how we voted. The only thing I might have suggested was that the voting deadline should have been extended to include more bloggers. I think there were alot of other music bloggers that could have included.
And the person who said that the list is too white-bread; I'm not too concerned. We all like the music. I'm Asian and actually I found that the audience of many of the bands on the list is multicutural anyway which has always comforted me when I go to shows.
In retrospect of my comment about the 'white-bread' comment, I wanted to clarify that everything seemed to be a little too predictable in choice. If I could I would take back the skin color comment because it does seem a little crass. On the whole, Canada's musical landscape is pretty diverse, and what makes it so special is that people don't really see color when it comes to who can do what.
Overall, I think this list was a great project, and it really does celebrate how great our Canadian music is. We are all very lucky to live in a place which makes it possible for this kind of community can develop.
ok so i can understand how people can see that Arcade Fire is better than BSS. But what's the deal with most of Canada missing out on The Flashing Lights or Matt Murphy's previous band The Superfrienz. That is what indie rock is supposed to be!
There's another band from Montreal you all should check out that should give Arcade Fire a run for their money called The Ease Down. In fact, if you haven't heard these bands, you should check them out. The Ease Down Ben Folds The Heavy Blinkers" WhiteRoom
I'm surprised the Arcade Fire beat out BSS as well...
and I too would've been pleased to give the Weakerthans some love, had they put a new record out... or even played more than two new songs live.
Good to see Martha Wainwright and Magneta Lane getting some list action. Concerned that Islands is getting on a list already. personally I didn't really get Final Fantasy. Ah well. Cheers
Agree that Caribou should have been on there. Torngat also gets my vote. Oh, and once the Islands record is released ... lookout.
Otherwise, not bad. Glad to see Cadence Weapon on there.
The real creeper hit of 2006 will be the *Andrew & The Ramblin' Roses*' album. Seriously, scope it.
Can someone please explain the lure of Broken Social Scene? I have listened to both albums multiple times, and I cannot stand it. But everyone is so into them, I have to figure I got my discs mixed up. All I hear is noise. With some vocals here and there. No hooks, period. If anything, it just gives me a headache.
What a bunch of crappy bands. Do Make Say Think and Godspeed are not in the top 25!!! Nothing against all these bands, but this list is crap.
I'm glad you're firm enough in your convictions to leave a name with that statement...
In case you missed my follow up to your comment over at popsheep:
Matthew, You did in fact ask us. Which was kind of you. Please do not take my critique of your list personally, I know that it isn't your personal list. I just fundamentally dislike the idea ranking music in lists, especially in a democratic manner. It lacks any sort of focus that makes it meaningful. It takes all the piss and vinegar out of it all. Which is why I did not submit a list to you. ps. I should emphasize that I like lists of music, it is the ranking thing I have a problem with.
That's a fair enough critique...I definitely prefer rankings, since otherwise it just looks like a shopping list of bands, but I can see why you might be opposed.
Fakiegrind music-bots have indicated that Arcade Fire is overrated, and should be replaced on your list by the High Dials.
Nice list though!
This is a pretty comprehensive list, I agree with it all. I think there should be some runner ups for these kids though:
kat burns You wrote about her before after Ladyfest Ottawa and her songs are great. I saw that performance and was blown away, and I've gone to see a few more shows since then. Everyone should check her out. www.playthetriangle.com Oh Bijou Equally as stunning a performance at Ladyfest. These kids are really beautiful and Casey's Mecija's voice is just a dream. Everyone should also check them out: www.ohbijou.com
what about comic book fever?
http://www.myspace.com/comicbookfever Wolf parade and arcade fire = good, of course Islands not as good as The unicorns. What is a girl to do?
Holy crap, these guys are good. Do they have any albums? I hope so...I want to feature them as soon as possible.
woohoo! Cuff the Duke and Great Lake Swimmers and so much more!!
Nice, very nice to see and hear so much Canadian sounds around here in Europe
how could u make a list of best canadian bands and not include nickelback and theory of a deadman they're only the most successful canadian bands ever. I"m pretty sure three days grace is to
ALL THESE BANDS SUCK WHAT ABOUT RUSH OR THE GUESS WHO OR APRIL WINE THEY MADE WHAY MORE HITS THAN THESE TOOLS!
I agree!! You can't talk about great Canadian bands without mentioning bands like RUSH OR THE GUESS WHO OR APRIL WINE Damn phuck even the bare Naked ladies for that matter considering some of the bands listed here ... lol Hot, right. PEACE
Wow what a list! That top 15 was amazing, a lot like I would've planned it.
Good job!
I am quite disapointed that uneXpect was not number one, there are the 2nd best band to ever come out of our great nation of canada. uneXpect is second behind, obviously, Rush, and to the guy who asked if the members of Rush and April Wine are dead... I have lost faith in humanity because of you. They are somewhat old bands, but they are certainly not dead and they are still some of the best bands ever!
arent all the guys in rush or april wine already dead? its time to listen to some new music, folks
Pilot Speed (formerly Pilate) is a growing phenomenon as well. I've seen them 3 times and they always floor me. Amazing live performances.
Great List. You're always going to have people complaining when you put something to a poll.
who sings the Paul Pfisterer song "Get Mixed Up" on the Joe Fresh ads?
The only bands/artist I can honestly say that I'm dissappointed didn't make the list are Joel Plaskett and Tomi Swick.
For catchy and melodic hooks, and lyrics that are at times both quirky and subtly clever, Joel Plaskett is at the echelon. Tomi Swick was another artist that I owe to Barenaked Ladies for turning me onto. After touring with BNL on the BLAM tour, everything started to look up for Tomi. He went from Hamilton indie artist to Canadian award winning rock star. I think he will take rock back from the Nickelback generic, bland, "all this crap sounds the same" (Theory of a Dead Man is Nickelback and vice versa) direction and hopefully lead others in the same direction. Kurt Swinghammer would definitely be an honourable mention. Another artist that I had never had the pleasure of hearing until seeing BNL live 2 years ago, this singer/song writer/sculpter/painter/web designer has colaborated and performed with many influential artists including Ani Difranco. His lyrics are clever and amusing, but not to the point were you wonder where the big top belongs in the stage setup. I'd most definitely say that he is one of the most talented acoustic musicians in Canada today.
this is an awesome list imo. i would add mannequins breathe and pride tiger.
hey where is Protest the Hero, Classified, or Priestess, and Alexisonfire? besides this great bands i totally agree, arcade fire and Death from Above 1979(RIP hope they get back together!) are awesome
Dude seriosly if there is no way those bands are that hot, i have not heard of any of them
This list is the biggest dogshit list ever compiled. I live in Texas and I've NEVER heard any of these groups. For a country that prides itself in being creative and musically talented, you forgot to mention the ONLY indie band that gets any play down here at all. RISE FOR ORDER.
I don't know if they're the best in Canada...but they're the best on this fucking list.
I strongly recommand the Adams Avenu Band.
www.adamsavenueband.com Once you've heard them you never forget them, For me TAAB are one of the greatest Canadian Rock Cover Bands i've seen. Regards Jack
Have you heard the Tom Fun Orchestra?
They're in a class by themselves. They will be huge. Dolly
thats a horrible lineup man wheres the R U S H where the who, and BTO, man this list is fucking brutal. whoever made this should die a slow and painful death. you guys should've put hedley on there .... ooorr not hedley is gay and should be assasinated all of em.
and thats my 2 cents
pretty good list
but the obvious absence of Tegan and Sara, the Unicorns and GY!BE makes it lose some credibility.
Mostly agree with the list,
But gotta add Deadmau5. Major influence on the electronic and house scene, esp for Canada. Going to be one of the headliners for the Bacardi B-Live tent at Virgin Fest in T-dot Sept 6 & 7th. Will be dope.
how about Papasean
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 "Movin' On" by Papasean Johnson (Blues/Rock Artist from British Columbia, Canada) "Movin' On" is the latest album from Papasean Johnson. It is an album recorded in the Blues/Rock style of a generation past, with catchy guitar riffs over driving beats coupled with energetic and loud vocals. "Ain't No Friend of Mine" combines elements from 50's rock with a contemporary edge in a rock song that really swings. "Young And Restless" is a grittier song that reminisces about the good old times of youth. For "Still Love That Girl" we find a more traditional blues song that is adapted into the groovy and loud style of Papasean Johnson. Overall, "Movin' On" is filled with a plethora of cool riffs over rhythmic beats that lie somewhere in-between straight-rock and dance-rock. This album is a good find for people who enjoy the likes of ZZ Top or other high tempo Blues/Rock acts. -Sean B. and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team
Not a bad list but how can you have a list of the "HOTTEST" bands in Canada and not mention Theory Of A Deadman and for that matter the band everyone loves to hate Nickelback... It is amazing that nobody will admit to being a Nickelback fan yet their releases top Album & Radio charts all over the world....
